Sometimes you just need to get away. Maybe you’ve had a stressful month at work, the dreary weather has you craving sunshine, or you simply need a change of scenery to recharge. But a last-minute getaway can get expensive, and you might not have room in your monthly budget. If that’s the case for you, take a look at your credit card rewards to see if you can tap into your points, miles or cash back rewards to help fund a trip.

  • Use your card issuer’s travel portal
  • Bonus rewards
  • Look for transfer promotions
  • Cash in your rewards
  • Take your last-minute vacation idea further with a credit card

Here are several ways your travel rewards credit card can boost your benefits and help fund a last-minute getaway.

Use your card issuer’s travel portal

Check to see if your credit card issuer has a travel portal, which is an online booking platform where you can use points, miles, or cash back to book travel.

Many issuers offer extra value when you book flights, accommodations or travel packages directly through their travel portal. You might also gain access to exclusive discounts or perks.

Bonus rewards

Some cards may offer bonus rewards when you book flights, hotels or dining using the issuer’s travel portal instead of from a travel booking website or directly from the airline, hotel or restaurant.

Look for transfer promotions

With certain credit cards, you may be able to transfer your rewards or points to a specific airline or hotel loyalty program. Sometimes your credit card issuer and its travel partners might even offer a transfer bonus promotion, where you earn extra rewards when you transfer your points.

Cash in your rewards

If your credit card issuer doesn’t offer a travel portal or you prefer to book directly through your airline or hotel’s website, consider cashing in your credit card rewards to help cover expenses.

If you’ve accumulated a lot of points or miles, you might be able to use them to reduce the initial cost of a plane ticket, hotel or to cover the cost of gas for a road trip.

Depending on your credit card, you can cash in rewards in different ways. You can often apply rewards to your statement credit to reduce your credit card balance. Some credit cards allow you to get cash back through direct deposit to your bank, while others may convert your rewards to gift cards that you can use for dining, gas or other purchases.

Take your last-minute vacation idea further with a credit card

Whether you want to jet off to a tropical destination or hop in your car for a cross-country road trip, sometimes you just need to get away. To help stay on budget, consider how you can use credit card rewards to support your last-minute vacation.

If your credit card issuer has a travel portal, there may be an opportunity to earn bonus rewards or take advantage of exclusive discounts when you book your trip. Alternatively, you can use your points or rewards to purchase a flight or pay for gas. By planning ahead and taking advantage of your credit card rewards, you can enjoy a getaway without breaking the bank.
